The Company formed in Erie, PA. Today’s large organization and network started as a small family owned business with entrepreneurial spirit.
The Company introduced a state-of-the-art car shredder, the first of its kind east of the Mississippi River, paving a road for future technological advancement in metal recycling.
Through a series of investments and acquisitions, the Company steadily grew its network throughout the North East spreading to Youngstown OH, Rochester NY and Buffalo NY. Moreover, it established Liberty Southwest Holdings, LLC in Phoenix AZ in 2007 – its first Southwest affiliate.
Scholz AG (today’s Scholz Group) acquired the majority stake in the businesses and Liberty Iron & Metal Holdings LLC was formed. Leveraging Scholz Group’s global footprint and its financial strength, Liberty actively increased its pace of growth and development.
Within just one year, backed by Scholz Group, one of the largest recycling companies in the World, Liberty acquired new facilities in Girard OH, Niles OH and Sharon PA to further expand its network and service capabilities in the Great Lake Area. Liberty further strategically entered into the North Mexican Market through the establishment of the joint venture Kalischatarra in Chihuahua, Mexico.
In Q3 2016, Liberty acquired the remaining 30% stake from Liberty Southwest Holdings.
In Q4 2016 Liberty integrated Scholz International Inc. – now called Liberty International Trading Inc. – to expand its in-house brokerage services to the Asian markets.
In 2017, Liberty saw a successful fortifying of market position in East Coast and Southwest.
To forge one firm, Liberty Iron & Metal Holdings changed its name to Liberty Iron & Metal, Inc.
To complete the centralization of one firm, on October 1, 2018 all locations merged under one entity, Liberty Iron & Metal, Inc.
In Q1, Liberty Iron & Metal Inc. announced that it completed the acquisition of substantially all assets of BNC Recycling Inc, (BNC) which will remain operational and be rebranded under the Liberty banner.
Today, Liberty Iron & Metal is a member of a large international group – Scholz Group. Scholz is a Germany-based global group of companies with roots dating back to 1872. Scholz is one of the biggest recycling groups in the world, with scrap yards, processing facilities and trading desks on three continents in over 20 countries. With 100 legal entities and more than 5,000 employees that process and sell over 6 million metric tons of recycled material per year.
